Description
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, management, and continuous improvement of all laboratory operations at the Walvis Bay site. The role ensures that laboratory throughput, quality, and efficiency meet client requirements and international quality standards. The Laboratory Manager will lead operational planning, resource management, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure optimal use of personnel, equipment, and infrastructure.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and optimize laboratory operations, including human resources, equipment, IT systems, and training.
- Ensure all work meets required quality standards and complies with integrity and safety programs.
- Handle client communications, complaints, and technical queries promptly and professionally.
- Plan and allocate resources for major projects and oversee technical requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement and method development in line with market and client needs.
- Oversee Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) compliance and promote a strong safety culture.
- Ensure cost control without compromising service quality or integrity.
- Lead, coach, and develop laboratory teams to achieve operational excellence.
- Maintain accreditation and compliance with the company’s quality management systems.
- Set and manage annual budgets, revenue targets, and profitability goals.
- Build and maintain a cohesive, motivated team focused on service excellence and collaboration.
- Support long- and short-term strategic operational development of the laboratory facility.
- Operate according to the highest ethical standards in line with the company’s Statement of Integrity.
- Perform additional duties as required by senior management.
Requirements
Education:
- BSc or National Diploma in Chemistry or equivalent qualification (required).
- Business qualification will be an added advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a commercial laboratory environment, preferably within the analytical testing or industrial sector.
- Proven experience in laboratory management, quality control, and operational leadership.
- Demonstrated experience in client liaison, budgeting, and project management.
Competencies and Skills:
- Strong ability to translate strategic goals into practical operational actions.
- Sound knowledge of laboratory operations, analytical techniques, and QA/QC principles.
- Excellent leadership, management, and communication skills.
- Financial acumen and ability to manage budgets and cost control.
- Analytical, detail-oriented, and results-driven mindset.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across all levels.
- Proficient in English (fluency in a local language is an asset).
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and ethical standards.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with management.
- Proficient in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and standard business software.
Contract: One year fixed term contract with the possibility of extension.
