Description

Africa Personnel Services, on behalf of its client, is looking for an Offshore Personnel - Cadet - Engine in the oil and gas industry. The Offshore Personnel - Cadet – Engine main objective is to gain practical, hands-on experience across all aspects of the ship's engine department, complete the required hours and tasks in a Training Record Book (TRB), and apply theoretical knowledge from their TVET program to qualify for the Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW).

Core Responsibilities

  1. Machinery Operation and Watchkeeping

The Cadet spends time observing and assisting the qualified Engineer Officers in the Engine Control Room (ECR) and Engine Room (ER).

  • Watchkeeping: Performing duties as a junior assistant to the Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) in the Engine Control Room or on rounds.
  • Routine Rounds: Assisting with scheduled inspections of all machinery spaces (Engine Room, Pump Room, Steering Gear Room) to monitor pressures, temperatures, and fluid levels.
  • Main Machinery: Learning the starting, stopping, and maneuvering procedures for the Main Propulsion Engines and auxiliary machinery (generators, compressors, pumps).
  • Offshore Systems: Becoming familiar with the complex systems essential for offshore work, such as Dynamic Positioning (DP) thrusters, high-power alternators, and specialized hydraulic systems.
  1. Maintenance and Repair

This involves direct, practical involvement in the maintenance work carried out by the ratings and officers.

  • Preventative Maintenance (PMS): Assisting in the execution of scheduled maintenance tasks as guided by the planned maintenance system.
  • Mechanical Overhauls: Participating in the dismantling, inspection, reassembly, and testing of various engine room components, including pumps, valves, filters, and purifiers.
  • Electrical Systems: Assisting the Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) or Engineer with basic maintenance on electrical motors, switchboards, and lighting systems, as part of the holistic engineering training.
  • Boiler and Heat Exchangers: Learning the maintenance, chemical treatment, and operational parameters of the vessel's boilers (if fitted) and heat exchange equipment.
  1. Bunkering and Fluid Management

Handling and monitoring the critical fluids used to power and lubricate the machinery.

  • Bunkering Operations: Assisting with the safe execution of fuel oil and lubricating oil transfer and bunkering procedures, including sounding tanks and checking for contamination.
  • Oil Testing: Learning to take and prepare samples of fuel and lubricating oils for onboard and shore-based testing.
  • Pollution Prevention: Strictly adhering to procedures for the proper storage, transfer, and disposal of bilge water, sludge, and oily residues in compliance with MARPOL regulations.
  1. Safety and Administration
  • Safety Drills: Active participation in all ship safety drills (fire-fighting, emergency steering, man overboard) with a focus on emergency procedures within the engine department.
  • Workshop Practice: Developing proficiency in workshop skills such as welding, grinding, lathing, and fitting under supervision.
  • Training Record Book (TRB): Meticulously completing and documenting all practical tasks, watch hours, and competency sign-offs required by the TVET program and the STCW CoC scheme.
  • Tool Management: Ensuring all engineering tools, spares, and equipment are correctly stored, inventoried, and maintained.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications (TVET/Level 4)

  • Academic: Successful completion of a recognized Marine Engineering TVET program, often resulting in a Diploma, Higher National Diploma, or equivalent Level 4/5 technical qualification.
  • Certification: Holds the necessary Basic Safety Training (BST) certifications as per STCW Regulation VI/1.
  • Medical: Valid Seafarer's Medical Certificate.
  • Commitment: Demonstrable strong aptitude for mechanics, electrical systems, and problem-solving, with a willingness to work in a demanding, hot, and noisy environment.
