Description

Africa Personnel Services, on behalf of its client, is looking for an Offshore Personnel – Steward in the oil and gas industry. The Offshore Personnel – Steward’s primary objective is to maintain exceptional standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and accommodation services in all living and communal areas, and to assist in the serving of food, ensuring the comfort and well-being of the offshore personnel.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Accommodation and Housekeeping

Maintaining hygienic living conditions for all personnel on board.

  • Cabin Service: Daily cleaning and sanitizing of crew and officer cabins/staterooms, including changing bed linens, making beds, and restocking supplies (soap, towels, etc.).
  • Communal Areas: Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in all common areas, including offices, recreation rooms, TV rooms, meeting rooms, corridors, and washrooms.
  • Janitorial Duties: Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, and polishing floors, walls, and ceilings as part of a regular deep cleaning schedule.
  • Laundry: Collecting, washing, drying, folding, and distributing crew laundry, uniforms, and ship linens.
  1. Galley and Mess Hall Service

Supporting the catering team to ensure efficient and hygienic food service.

  • Meal Service: Assisting the Ship's Cook/Chef with setting up and breaking down the mess hall (dining area), including setting tables and maintaining the service line.
  • Clean-up: Clearing tables, washing dishes (pot wash), cutlery, and kitchen utensils, and ensuring the galley (kitchen) and mess hall are clean and sanitized after every meal service.
  • Provisioning: Assisting in receiving, checking, and properly storing food, provisions, and catering supplies, adhering to FIFO (First-In, First-Out) principles.
  • Waste Management: Responsible for the proper segregation, handling, and disposal of all galley, food, and accommodation waste according to MARPOL and company environmental regulations.
  1. Safety, Emergency, and Hygiene

As a crew member, the Steward has mandated safety responsibilities in an emergency.

  • Emergency Response: Participating in all mandatory safety drills (fire, abandon ship, man overboard) and taking on their assigned role as per the Muster List (e.g., assisting with passenger/non-essential personnel mustering).
  • Hygiene Standards: Strict adherence to international and company HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) food safety plans and hygiene protocols to prevent contamination and illness.
  • Security: Performing security duties such as gangway/access watch when designated.
  • Reporting: Reporting any maintenance issues, defects, or safety hazards immediately to the supervisor (Chief Cook or Chief Steward).

Requirements

Certifications and Training Requirements

An Offshore Steward position requires a combination of basic maritime safety training (STCW) and food-specific hygiene training (MLC).

  1. STCW Basic Safety Training (Mandatory for all Seafarers)

As the vessel operates internationally, all personnel, regardless of department, must hold valid STCW Basic Training (known as STCW Reg. VI/1).

Purpose

PST (Personal Survival Techniques)

How to survive if forced to abandon ship.

FPFF (Fire Prevention and Firefighting)

Basic fire safety and use of firefighting equipment.

EFA (Elementary First Aid)

Basic life support and first aid in a maritime setting.

PSSR (Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities)

Introduces work procedures, safety practices, and communication.

 

  1. Offshore & Hygiene Certifications (Essential)

Certification/Training

Purpose

Medical Fitness

A valid Seafarer Medical Certificate (e.g., ENG1 or equivalent) confirming fitness to work at sea.

BOSIET/FOET

Basic/Further Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (required for all personnel working on an offshore installation/vessel, including helicopter underwater escape training).

Food Handler's Certificate

Training in accordance with the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC 2006) Regulation 3.2 to ensure proper food handling and hygiene practices.

Security Awareness

STCW Regulation VI/6 to understand basic vessel security protocols.
