Description
The Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of excavators in an open pit mining environment. The role supports mining operations by carrying out excavation, loading, trenching, stockpiling, and related earthmoving activities in accordance with mine plans, safety standards, and production targets.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Duties
- Operate excavators of various sizes to carry out excavation, loading of haul trucks, trenching, benching, and material movement in an open pit environment
- Load blasted material, overburden, and ore accurately and efficiently
- Perform selective mining where required to minimize ore dilution and material loss
- Ensure excavation activities align with mine design, grade control instructions, and supervisor directives
- Conduct daily pre-start inspections and report defects or abnormalities immediately
- Maintain optimal equipment positioning to ensure safe and efficient loading cycles
Equipment Care & Maintenance
- Conduct routine equipment checks and basic maintenance (lubrication, cleaning, refuelling where applicable)
- Identify and report mechanical faults, wear, or unsafe conditions
- Operate equipment within manufacturer specifications to reduce wear and prevent damage
- Keep the excavator clean and in good working condition
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Adhere strictly to mine health and safety rules, procedures, and legal requirements
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and risk assessments
- Identify hazards and unsafe acts, and take corrective action or report immediately
- Comply with environmental management practices, including dust control and spill prevention
- Stop work if unsafe conditions are identified and report to the supervisor
Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatch, and haul truck operators
- Follow radio communication protocols and hand signals where applicable
- Support teamwork to achieve daily production and safety targets
- Assist with other mining or site activities as reasonably required
Key Performance Areas (KPAs)
- Safe operation of excavator equipment
- Compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards
- Productivity and efficiency (cycle times, loading accuracy)
- Equipment care and reduced downtime
- Quality of excavation and loading
Requirements
Qualifications & Certification
- Grade 10 or equivalent (Grade 12 advantageous)
- Valid Excavator Operator Certificate (accredited training provider)
Experience
- Minimum of 2–5 years’ experience operating excavators in an open pit mining environment
- Proven experience loading haul trucks in mining operations
- Experience with different excavator sizes and models (advantageous)
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of open pit mining practices
- Good knowledge of equipment operating limits and safety requirements
- Ability to read and follow mine plans and instructions
- Good hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness
- Ability to work under pressure and meet production targets
- Strong safety mindset and attention to detail
Physical & Work Conditions
- Ability to work extended hours, shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required
- Ability to work in dusty, noisy, and outdoor mining conditions
- Physically fit to perform operational duties
