Description

Job Purpose

To support the safe and efficient operation of the yard by receiving, unpacking, inspecting, storing, handling, and releasing materials, equipment, and cargo. The General Yard Hand assists with general housekeeping, lifting and rigging activities, inventory movements, and ensures compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Receiving and Inspection

  • Assist with receiving incoming materials, equipment, and cargo deliveries.
  • Verify quantities and inspect items for visible damage upon receipt.
  • Unpack shipments and prepare materials for storage or onward distribution.
  • Report discrepancies, shortages, damages, or non-conformances to the Yard Supervisor.
  • Ensure all received items are properly identified and labelled.

Yard Operations

  • Load, unload, move, and position materials using approved manual handling techniques and lifting equipment.
  • Assist with cargo preparation, packing, securing, and release activities.
  • Support rigging and lifting operations under the direction of competent personnel.
  • Prepare equipment and materials for dispatch to project sites, vessels, or clients.
  • Maintain accurate material movement records as required.

Storage and Housekeeping

  • Store materials in designated locations according to company procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free yard, warehouse, and storage areas.
  • Dispose of waste materials in accordance with environmental and company requirements.
  • Assist with stock counts and inventory verification activities.

Health, Safety, and Environment

  • Comply with all company HSE policies, procedures, and permit requirements.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and training sessions.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and hazards.
  • Follow safe lifting, rigging, and manual handling practices.
  • Provide basic first aid assistance within the scope of training when required.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 10 or equivalent secondary education.
  • Valid Basic First Aid Certificate.
  • OHS / Workplace Safety Training Certificate.
  • Basic Lifting and Rigging Awareness Training.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a yard, warehouse, logistics, construction, marine, oil & gas, or industrial environment preferred.
  • Experience in receiving, unpacking, storing, and releasing materials is advantageous.

Required Competencies

  • Basic understanding of warehouse and yard operations.
  • Ability to read and understand simple work instructions in English.
  • Knowledge of safe manual handling techniques.
  • Basic understanding of lifting and rigging practices.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work safely in a physically demanding environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious.

Physical Requirements

  • Medically fit for manual labour and yard operations.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials within safe working limits.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Capability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks.

  • Compliance with safety and housekeeping standards.
  • Accuracy of receiving and release activities.
  • Timely handling of materials and equipment.
  • Zero preventable incidents or damage caused by improper handling.
  • Effective support of inventory and yard operations.
  • Positive participation in HSE and operational activities.

Operational Requirements

During active operations, shall maintain a 24/7 operational manning regime by rotational shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, for all operational roles required to support vessel operations, loadouts/backloads, quayside activities, yard operations, customs and materials handling, and time-sensitive drilling logistics.
