Description
The Pharmacist Assistant assists the drug utilization review pharmacists manage the financial and clinical risk of contracted medical schemes by implementing the policies, protocols and formularies for reimbursement for medicines. The Pharmacist Assistant will authorize medicines for chronic benefit through the application of formularies and protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review applications for medicine benefits of a medical scheme for eligibility to the specific medicine benefit.
- The pharmacist assistant must assess whether the diagnosis is eligible for re-imbursement according to the Scheme’s/ Plan rules.
- All necessary supportive documentation must be obtained by pharmacist assistant to support eligibility.
- Assess each application for medicine benefits according to the Scheme rules that apply to medicines reimbursed from the various medicine benefits available in the Scheme/ Plan.
- Forward the application to the pharmacist of the application if it does not meet the criteria for authorization.
- Assist beneficiaries identify more appropriate and/or more affordable medicines...
- Recommend to the beneficiary’s doctor all potential changes to the prescribed medicines. Suggest alternatives to the doctor. Be able to substantiate recommended changes if requested.
- All authorizations must be performed in accordance the DUR policies and protocols developed and maintained by company.
- These duties may change from time to time in response to the changing needs
- Circumstances associated with medicine management in the medical scheme environment.
- Authorize the approved medicines per beneficiary using the Chronic Medicine Management software and the authorizations must be completed within the service level response times for the service.
- Communicate with prescribers, dispensing pharmacists and beneficiaries as necessary.
- Provide advice or information as required by Customer service personnel with regards to answering queries about medicine authorizations.
- Maintain knowledge of medicines and keep abreast with changes in treatment guidelines and with pharmaceutical products available in Namibia.
- Provide a medicine management telephonic support service for Chronic medicine management, within the service level response times of the Service level agreements.
- Maintain records of work performed.
Requirements
Experience and qualifications:
The incumbent is expected to fulfil the following criteria:
- Pharmacist Assistant qualification
- Registered with Pharmacy Council of Namibia (PCNA)
- Experience in medicine management an advantage
- Experience and knowledge of other Chronic diseases an advantage.
- Experience and knowledge of the medical scheme environment an advantage.
- Experience and knowledge of the medical schemes legislation particularly pertaining to PMBs an advantage.
Language requirements
- English: Primary business language. Be able to speak, write, spell, read and comprehend the language.
- Other languages: The ability to converse in another local language an advantage.
- All written and verbal communication must be conducted in a professional manner.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Customer service focus.
- Ability to solve problems in a customer friendly manner.
Computer literacy
Proficiency with the following programmes is required:
- MS Word
- MS Excel
- MS Outlook/ email
- MS Explorer/Internet
- Some prior knowledge /experience with medical scheme administration and/or managed care system.
