Description

We are looking for an experienced Safety Officer (Mining ) Location :Outside Otjiwarongo .

Key Focus :To ensure a safe working environment by implementing and monitoring health and safety systems, enforcing legal and company HSE standards, and promoting a culture of safety compliance throughout the mine site.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Compliance & Risk Management
    • Ensure compliance with the Namibian Labour Act, Minerals (Prospecting and Mining) Act, and other applicable HSE legislation.
    • Conduct regular inspections and risk assessments of the mine site.
    • Identify, evaluate, and control hazards and recommend corrective/preventative measures.
  2. Incident Management
    • Investigate accidents, near-misses, and incidents to determine root causes.
    • Compile and submit incident and injury reports to relevant authorities and management.
    • Ensure corrective actions are implemented and monitored.
  3. Safety Training and Awareness
    • Conduct inductions and regular safety training for all employees and contractors.
    • Promote health and safety awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and refresher sessions.
    • Maintain training records and ensure certifications are up to date.
  4. HSE System Implementation
    • Develop, implement, and maintain mine-specific safety procedures, policies, and safe work instructions.
    • Support ISO 45001 or similar safety management system implementation (if applicable).
    • Participate in internal HSE audits.
  5. Emergency Preparedness
    • Coordinate emergency response drills and ensure all teams are well-versed in emergency protocols.
    • Ensure firefighting, first aid, and rescue equipment are maintained and accessible.
  6. Reporting & Documentation
    • Maintain and update the Safety File.
    • Compile daily, weekly, and monthly HSE reports.
    • Monitor and track leading and lagging indicators (e.g. LTIs, MTIs, Near Misses).

 

Working Conditions:

  • Site-based position semi-remote mining environment.
  • May be required to work shifts or extended hours.
  • PPE must be worn at all times as per site rules.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Grade 12 (minimum requirement).
  • Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
  • SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or NOSA certification (advantageous).
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a mining or heavy industrial environment.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Key Competencies & Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Namibian HSE legislation and mining safety standards.
  • Strong observational and risk assessment skills.
  • Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead investigations and influence behavioral change.
  • Physically fit to conduct field inspections in remote areas.
